The Riese & Müller UBN Five Commute is an urban e-bike designed for both city commuting and weekend gravel adventures. In this review, I’ll take you through my experience riding this bike on the Plym Valley Trail, its key features, and why it might be the perfect e-bike for your needs.
First Impressions & Design
The UBN Five Commute arrived in early November, and after some time riding it in different conditions, I can confidently say it’s a well-rounded commuter and light gravel bike. I tested it on various routes, often keeping the battery off, and found it to be incredibly efficient and easy to ride even without assistance.
This model comes in three sizes:
45cm frame for riders 1.55m – 1.70m
51cm frame for riders 1.65m – 1.80m
57cm frame (the tested version) for riders 1.75m – 1.95m
It features the Selva (green metallic) colour, which pairs beautifully with the tan-wall Schwalbe G-One tyres. The seamless welding on the frame gives it a sleek and premium look, setting it apart from other e-bikes.

Performance & Motor System
The UBN Five Commute is powered by the Fazua Ride 60 system, a lightweight motor that delivers 60 Nm of torque and 250W nominal power. Unlike heavier Bosch motors, this system keeps the bike light while still providing enough assistance for most urban and light off-road conditions.
Paired with a 430Wh battery, this setup offers an impressive range. Under normal usage, you can expect 60+ miles on a full charge. Of course, riding in Rocket mode or on demanding terrains will reduce range, but the efficiency of the drivetrain makes it a long-distance performer.
Riding Experience & Handling
The UBN Five Commute is designed with a mix of city commuting and gravel capabilities in mind. It features:
28-inch (700C) wheels with Schwalbe G-One tyres, offering a smooth and efficient ride.
Suntour GVX suspension fork (60mm travel), providing comfort over bumps without adding excessive weight.
Shimano GRX 11-speed drivetrain, a gravel-specific setup with an 11-48T cassette, allowing smooth shifting across different terrains.
Drop handlebars, making it stand out from the flat-bar UBN models and offering a more aerodynamic and versatile riding position.
One unique aspect of the UBN Five Commute is its hidden handlebar-integrated control buttons. Located under the bar tape, these buttons allow you to switch between Fazua’s three power modes (Breeze, River, and Rocket) without taking your hands off the bars. Additionally, a Boost function provides up to 450 watts of power for short bursts, lasting 12 seconds while riding or 4 seconds from a standstill.

Smart Features & Security
RX Chip: Built-in GPS Tracker
One standout feature is the RX Chip, which provides GPS tracking and an anti-theft alarm. The first year of service is included, allowing you to locate your bike in real-time through the Riese & Müller app. If the bike is moved while locked, it emits an audible alarm and flashing lights to deter thieves.
SP Connect Smartphone Mount & Charging
The bike includes an SP Connect mount on the handlebars, allowing you to attach your smartphone as a display. While the Riese & Müller app lacks built-in navigation, you can easily use Komoot or Google Maps instead. Additionally, the bike features a USB-C charging port, so you can keep your phone powered during long rides.
Practicality for Commuting
The UBN Five Commute is well-equipped for daily commuting and weekend touring, featuring:
Full-length mudguards to keep you dry in wet conditions.
Supernova front light & integrated rear light, ensuring visibility in low-light conditions.
Rear rack (7.5kg capacity per side), compatible with panniers or bikepacking bags.
Abus Shield lock (optional extra) for additional security.
Kickstand, which may seem minor but is incredibly practical for daily use.
