Dan
EDEMO's Head Honcho Dan possesses a legendary passion for e-bikes. His in-depth knowledge and eagerness to share his genuine experiences with e-bikes have proven invaluable to anyone who visits our showroom or contacts him by phone.
Fresh from Eurobike 2025, Dan’s just test ridden the brand-new Riese & Müller Charger5 – and it’s shaping up to be one of the most versatile and refined e-bikes Riese & Müller have ever produced.
The model he tried first was the Charger5 GT Rohloff in Pine (58cm), and it’s clear that R&M have retianed what made the Charger4 so popular while introducing some very welcome improvements.
What’s New on the Charger5?
One of the most significant updates is the introduction of the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen5 motor across the Touring, Vario (manual or automatic), and Rohloff models. This next-generation motor offers even smoother integration into the frame, and soon, impressively, torque settings of up to 100Nm. That’s an enormous step up in power, and something we’re really looking forward to putting through its paces here in the UK.
Another major upgrade is the availability of the Pinion MGU (Motor Gearbox Unit) – a revolutionary, all-in-one system that combines a motor and gearbox, which will be available from September. We’ve been impressed with the Pinion MGU system on the Delite5 and Homage5, so this is a very welcome addition to the Charger5 lineup.
Dan also tried the Charger5 GT Pinion in Magnesium (53cm), and described the shifting as silky smooth in both manual and automatic modes – although he personally prefers manual. That colour, by the way? “Almost liquid.” One to see in person.
Design Refinements & Upgrades Available
Cleaner frame integration: The Gen5 motor is much more seamlessly housed within the frame.
Top-loading battery: Much easier to remove, especially with muddy hands, and better protected from road spray.
Charging port on top tube: Better latch cover, easier to reach, and better protected from dirt and water.
New colours: Pine and Magnesium — both look fantastic up close.
Low step (Mixte) version available: For even more rider choice.
Fox suspension upgrade: Now fitted to the Rohloff and Pinion versions.
Shultz suspension seatpost: Standard now — and Dan rates it highly.
RX chip included: Tracker and alarm built in for added security.
Optional Bosch eBike ABS: A safety feature we’re seeing more of — helps prevent wheel lock-up under hard braking.
High Speed and Core Options
There will also be High-Speed versions of the Charger5 using the Bosch or Pinion systems. However, in the UK, these require DVLA registration, insurance, and a moped licence.
At the other end of the range, the Core model is a new, more accessible version. It comes with a 600Wh battery (instead of 800Wh), standard specifications and colour, and fewer customisation options – but offers a significant price saving and faster delivery (3–4 weeks rather than 4–6 weeks).
Dan’s Early Verdict
I loved the ride feel of the Charger5 GT Rohloff on tarmac – very refined and comfortable. I also appreciated the minor practical upgrades, especially the new charging port and battery design. There’s a Charger5 spec for just about everyone.
Which setup would I choose? The Bosch Gen5 motor with Rohloff R14 is my favourite – but I also like the innovation behind the Pinion MGU. We’ll be doing more in-depth tests as soon as the first bikes arrive.
